How to Cure Night Itching

Night itching can be frustrating and can keep you up throughout the night. It can also be disruptive to your partner's sleeping habits. There are many possible causes for night itching. Night itching can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition so it is advisable to be checked by a physician or a dermatologist who can pinpoint and cure the cause. However, there are some things you can do at home to help relieve your night itching.

      Take a lukewarm bath prior to bedtime. There are different bath products specifically formulated to soothe skin, especially those made with oatmeal. Use a oatmeal body scrub or bubble bath.

      Apply moisturizing lotion before bed. Often dry skin is the culprit for night itching so using a good moisturizer may help eliminate the problem.

      Wear light, loose clothes to bed. Avoid any itchy or heavy clothes that may compound the problem of night itching.

      Take a dose of oral antihistamine shortly before bed. Night itching can also be caused by allergies in which case an oral antihistamine should help.

      Apply hydrocortisone or another topical corticosteroid cream to affected areas. If your night itching is confined to a specific area, this may help. Cover the cream with cotton soaked in water to help the skin absorb the cream.

      Switch the brands you use of detergent, fabric softener, soap, and lotion to determine if you are allergic to any products you are using that come in contact with your skin.
