Prescription Drugs for Pimples

Acne is a common problem for teenagers and some adults. Puberty can cause acne to flair up in teens -- while other factors such as a dirty work environment or a genetic disorder may cause adults to get acne. Acne can usually be removed with facial products, such as washes and moisturizers. However, sometimes acne can persist past normal treatments. When acne cannot be removed by simple cleaning there are several types of prescription medication you can use to minimize and eventually get rid of your pimples.
  1. Differin

    • Differin is formerly known as "Adapalene" is a once-a-day gel. Differin slows the rate of skin cell shedding. This keeps the shedding skin cells from getting into the pores and causing blemishes such as acne or pimples. This treatment requires reduced contact with sunlight.

    Azelaic Acid

    • Azelaic acid is a treatment cream meant to be applied twice daily for maximum results. Azelaic acid helps skin cells renew themselves more quickly. This prevents skin cells from building up and clogging pores, which creates acne. This treatment also kills the bacterias that form blackheads.

    Benzoyl Peroxide

    • Benzoyle peroxide is available in gel, wash and cream forms. Benzoyl peroxide specifically kills propionibacterium acne -- the bacteria that causes acne to form in the first place. This treatment also has a peeling effect which is used to remove impurities from the skin after the treatment has been applied.

    Erythromycin

    • Erythromycin is an ointment that comes in small packets. This treatment is an antibiotic meant to be used twice daily. Erythromycin is an antibacterial agent that prevents acne-causing bacterias from growing. The gel is meant to be applied then washed off.
