The scars are a part of healing and a natural way for the skin to repair itself. But scars can be very noticeable and some people want to get rid of them. Try over-the-counter scar treatment products. Common active ingredients in OTC products include alpha hydroxy acids, silicone, and onion extract. Many scar-treatment products require application of a cream or lotion one or two times a day for a few months. With many products on the market containing a variety of active ingredients, you may need to try several before hitting upon an effective product. If OTC products don't work for you, consider consulting a dermatologist.

See a dermatologist for a chemical peel. During a chemical peel a doctor applies a chemical, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, to the skin. The chemical removes the top layer of the skin. After the skin heals, new skin grows. This newer skin is less scarred that the original skin. In most cases, the doctor performs a series of chemical peels spaced a few months apart.

Have a dermatologist perform laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing uses a beam of light to vaporize scar tissue. The doctor directs the beam under the skin so the top layer of skin is not damaged; this can be an advantage over chemical peels. Another advantage to laser resurfacing that the heat of the laser beam accelerates the healing process. As with other medical scar procedures, a series of laser treatments is usually needed. These treatments occur a few months apart.
