How to Stop March Fly Bites From Itching

March flies, also known as biting flies, leave red welts after biting through the skin. Much like mosquitoes, March flies suck blood, carrying disease from one host to the other. The painful mark left by March flies also itches tempting you to scratch the inflamed area, which may cause infection. Relieve the itch with over-the-counter remedies.

  • Wash clothes
  • Antibacterial soap
  • Calamine lotion or other anti-itch cream

      Wash the bite area on skin with an antibacterial soap and water. Blot soap gently on the bites with a wash cloth. Rinse the soap from skin with the wet wash cloth. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel.

      Cover the bite areas with a calamine lotion or a product that reduces itching. Reapply as needed or as directed on the product instructions. Clean the old lotion from your skin before applying fresh.

      Take an over-the-counter medication with antihistamine for severe itching symptoms. Take only as directed and read the warning label before using as some medications may interfere with other drugs you take.
