1
Wash the infected area with soap and warm water several times throughout the day, making sure to pat dry with a clean towel each time.
-
2
Cover the infected area with bandages or clean clothing, to prevent it from coming into contact with anything that might aggravate the infection. This also prevents the spread of staph.
-
3
Wash your hands with antibacterial soap immediately after handling the infected area.
-
4
Take the medication prescribed by your doctor as directed. Over-the-counter topical antibiotic or oral antibiotics are typical.
-
5
Have boils surgically drained, if necessary. This removes the source of the infection -- the pus -- from the body, which speeds up the healing process. Your doctor will decide if this is a recommended course of action: Do not do this on your own at home.
-
6
Administer intravenous antibiotics. If your staph infection becomes serious, your doctor will order that antibiotics be administered intravenously.
