How to Reduce Under-Eye Swelling

Under-eye swelling occurs as a result of fluid retention under the eyes, leading to irritation, discomfort and embarrassment. Whether caused by allergies, illness or too much alcohol the night before, puffy eyes are uncomfortable and unattractive. Home remedies provide relief from swelling and redness associated with occasional bags under the eyes. If under-eye swelling is a regular problem for you, temporary relief can be found until consulting further with a doctor.

Instructions

  1. Eye relief

    • 1
Make a cold compress with a clean, damp washcloth.

Dampen a washcloth and place it in the refrigerator.

    • 2

Lay down with your head propped up with an extra pillow to keep it elevated above your heart. Place a cold cucumber slice on each closed eye. Leave the cucumber slices in place for 10 minutes to reduce puffiness in the under-eye area and eyelid.

    • 3

Remove the cucumber slices and discard. Take the cold washcloth out of the refrigerator and blot around the eye to remove cucumber juice and treat remaining puffiness. Hold the washcloth against the skin for a couple minutes in areas where under-eye swelling has not improved.

Use eye cream to help reduce swelling.

Pat your skin dry with a face towel. Dab eye cream onto the skin under your eyes using the pad of your little finger. Apply a cream made specifically to reduce swelling around the eyes.
