Skin is the largest organ in a person's body. Besides things such as a person's facial features, body type or height, skin is also the first thing people notice. Therefore, when anything is wrong with the skin, such as a rash, irritations or welts, the individual often wants to seek treatment to quickly restore or improve the skin's condition.     • Skin irritations refer to the aggravation the skin undergoes after it has come in contact with chemicals, substances like oils or soaps, acids and water.     Skin Welts

    • Angioedema, commonly referred as skin welts, is swelling that happens beneath the skin instead of on the surface. The swelling occurs spread out of in a line around the lips and eyes, in the throat, or on the feet and hands. One type of angioedema is called hives. Although caused by an allergic reaction, foods, insect bites, hits, exposure to heat and water, and medication can cause welts. An individual may experience itching and pain. Unlike rashes, welts may accompany additional symptoms. These symptoms include breathing difficulty and abdominal cramping.

    Skin Rashes

    • A skin rash changes the texture and color of a person's skin. However, the appearance of the rash depends on the type of symptoms. For example, there are two types of rashes. Contact dermatitis is caused by something that an individual touches. Therefore, the skin becomes inflamed by things such as soaps, cosmetics, chemicals found in latex, clothing and elastic. Seborrheic dermatitis has different symptoms. It appears as scaly, red patches behind the ears and around the nose, mouth, eyelids and eyebrows. According to MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia, seborrheic dermatitis is cause by age, stress, weather conditions, fatigue, alcohol-based lotions and infrequent shampooing. Skin rashes are also caused by medical conditions like psoriasis, eczema, shingles and impetigo.

    • A person with problems such as irritations, rashes and welts should consult a physician to make sure that nothing is medically wrong. For example, skin rashes can be caused by medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus or Kawasaki disease, according to MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia. Welts can be a sign of infections such as leukemia or lymphoma.
