How to Use Nystatin Ointment

Fungi like Candida, normally present on the skin in nominal amounts, may grow in numbers if infection occurs. If Candida infects the skin, a red, raised rash will cause pain and itching, and a common treatment for Candida and other fungal or yeast infections involves nystatin ointment. Treat a fungal infection by following physician recommendations.

Instructions

    • 1

Immediately before you apply nystatin ointment, cleanse the affected skin. Lather soap and gently wash the skin thoroughly. Rinse completely with warm water.

    • 2

Dry with clean towel. Wait a minute or two to ensure that any remaining moisture on the skin evaporates.

    • 3

Apply nystatin evenly to the affected skin, covering it completely with a thin layer of ointment.

    • 4

Expose the ointment-covered skin to as much air as possible. If you are treating a diaper area, try to leave the diaper off for extended periods of the day. Place the baby on a waterproof mat without a diaper whenever possible, especially immediately after you apply ointment.

    • 5

Repeat washing, drying and ointment application twice each day, mornings and evenings, for as long as your physician recommends.
