Information on Atrac-Tain Lotion

Atrac-Tain lotion is an emollient that is used to treat dry skin (xeroderma). Dry skin is a common problem, particularly in children under 10 and adults over 60, resulting from both external (exogenous) and internal (endogenous) factors. Exogenous factors include climactic conditions such as sun and rain, therapeutic treatments and environmental conditions; and endogenous factors include genetic predisposition, hormonal fluctuations, aging and illness. Dry skin is deficient in natural lipids, so one of the most important aspects of care is to rehydrate and regenerate the lipid barrier.
  1. Ingredients

    • The active ingredients of Atrac-Tain lotion are urea and Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA). Different brands contain varying levels of each product, but FDA regulations forbid over-the-counter products from containing more than 10 percent of AHA. Alpha Hydroxy Acid is a chemical made from milk and fruit sugars. It increases the elasticity of skin and makes it more resistant to cracking. Urea is a natural moisturizer, which increases the water-binding capacity of the outer layer of skin and attracts water to dry skin cells. It softens the keratin that holds the outer layer, or epidermis, together, which helps to slough away dead cells, leaving skin smoother and softer.

    Uses of Atrac-Tain Lotion

    • Atrac-Tain lotion can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions. It provides relief from flaking and itchiness and soothes minor skin irritations, such as diaper rash. Brands with a high concentration of urea can also be used to soften calloused or scaly skin, such as cracked heels. Another application is to treat radiation skin burns, but check with hospital personnel that a particular brand is suitable.

    Application

    • The best time to apply the lotion is after a bath or shower.

The lotion needs to be used regularly in order to produce any real benefit, and the bottle should be shaken vigorously before use. Emollients are most effective with water, so the best time to apply is after showering or bathing. When using to treat dry, chapped hands, the lotion may need to be re-applied each time they are washed. If using Atrac-Tain on a regular schedule and a dose is missed, do not use extra lotion to try and compensate: simply apply the normal amount as soon as possible.

    Considerations

    • Emollients do not usually have any side effects, but Atrac-Tain lotion should not be used if you suffer from certain allergies or skin conditions, or if you are taking other medications, so ensure that the doctor or pharmacist is aware of any previous relevant medical history. It may also be unsuitable for use if pregnant or breast-feeding. If any irritation or redness does occur, stop using the lotion and inform the doctor. Atrac-Tain is harmful if swallowed, so if it is ingested, contact a doctor or call the local poison control center. Be careful to avoid sensitive areas such as eyes, inside of nose and mouth or vaginal areas. Localized irritation may occur if the lotion is applied to recently-shaved skin or over cuts and abrasions. Read the instructions carefully before use.

    Storage and Disposal

    • Atrac-Tain lotion should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and natural sunlight. Any leftover or expired lotion should be disposed of safely. Do not flush down the toilet or pour into a drain. Either take the bottle to a pharmacist for disposal or consult your local waste disposal department for instructions.
