How to Relieve Itching
Itchy skin is known as pruritus. The causes of itching can include skin conditions, allergic reactions, pregnancy and medications. Without treatment, prolonged itching will lead to complications. Skin constantly scratched will become thickened, discolored, raw -- and possibly infected by bacteria. Consulting with your physician can help you pinpoint the cause of your itching -- and there are various treatment methods which can provide some relief.Things You'll Need

1
FInd an emollient rich moisturizer. Apply an emollient cream to your body after bathing. Emollient creams lock in moisture, which prevents excessive drying of your skin. Avoid using scented creams, as this can increase itching.
-
2
Use a corticosteroid cream. Apply the cream to the affected skin. Cover with a dampened dressing, to help the cream absorb into your skin.
-
3
Cut your nails short. This will minimize the impact of scratching.
-
4
Take an antihistamine, as suggested by The Merck Manuals. Antihistamines can help alleviate symptoms of allergies, including itchiness, inflammation and hives.
-
5
Use an ointment that contains menthol, camphor or calamine. Apply the ointment to affected areas.
-
6
Soak in a colloidal oatmeal bath to soothe your skin. Use lukewarm water, and sit in your tub for up to 15 minutes.
