How to Get Rid of Dead Skin Cells in Your Pores

Dead skin cells and trapped oil combine to clog your pores and form pimples. They can also stretch out your pores, making them look larger. Many over-the-counter acne products are available that can help treat this problem. Develop a regular, gentle cleansing routine to keep your pores clear and stop acne from forming.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the problem areas twice daily with a gentle soap or mild cleanser. Don't scrub your skin or wash more often; these can make acne worse.

    • 2

Apply an acne product that contains benzoyl peroxide regularly, then avoid washing or using any other medications on the treated area for at least an hour. Benzoyl peroxide is available in strengths from 2.5 to 10 percent. Start with a lower strength, then choose a higher strength if it's not effective. In addition to unclogging pores, benzoyl peroxide eliminates the bacteria that promotes acne and has a drying effect, making it easier to wash away excess oils and dirt. Benzoyl peroxide is probably the most effective active ingredient in acne products, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    • 3

Purchase a product with salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids or sulfur if benzoyl peroxide is ineffective.

    • 4

Refrain from using oily cosmetics, sunscreens and hair products. Apply products labeled "oil-free" or "noncomedogenic," which won't clog pores.

    • 5

Avoid touching your face. Also avoid resting objects, such as telephone receivers or cell phones, against your face.

    • 6

Consult a dermatologist if your skin does not improve within four to six weeks. Your dermatologist may recommend a prescription cleanser or medication.
