How to Care for Toe Fungus
Toe fungus is not an unusual condition. In most cases, the fungus will occur underneath or around the toenail. It can begin with a small white or yellow spot under the tip of the toenail, and when the fungus begins to spread, the nail can discolor, thicken and develop ridged edges. The fungus is a living organism that grows in dark, damp environments such as the toe. It is important to care for the fungus immediately lest it spread and cause greater issues not only on the toe, but also in the rest of your body.Things You'll Need
- Toenail clippers
- Fingernail file
- Flip-flops or sandals for showering

1
Clean the affected area daily using warm water and soap. Keeping the toe and entire foot clean is essential to healing and to prevent spreading the fungus.
-
2
Wear socks and shoes that are completely dry. Moist environments cause fungi to flourish and spread.
-
3
Cut and file the nail carefully, removing any excess growth.
-
4
Consult a physician if the fungus continues to spread. The physician will be able to prescribe a localized polish containing ciclopirox (Loprox) or amorolfine (Loceryl) that will reduce the fungi's size.
