How to Get Rid of Ringworm on a Child

Ringworm, so called because of the series of rings the infection can produce, is a contagious fungal infection that starts as a small sore or pimple. With time the infection develops into a scaly circular lesion and can eventually become swollen and filled with pus if left untreated. You may elect to seek the advice of a doctor; however, it is possible to cure your child's ringworm within four weeks at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Cleanse the ringworm and surrounding skin with a soap and warm water. Dry the area thoroughly.

    • 2

Apply an over-the-counter antifungal medicine to the infection. Use medications such as drying powders, lotions or creams that contain miconazole or clotrimazole, both of which treat fungal infections. Apply the medication directly to the ringworm, as well as the areas around the infection. Use the medication as often as directed on the package for a full two to four weeks. Do not stop using the medication because your child's symptoms disappear.

Wash your child's linens and clothes daily while he is infected. Keep her skin clean and dry throughout the day. Do not allow your child to touch the infected area in order to avoid spreading it to other areas of the body. Do not allow your child to come into direct contact with others or share his hair utensils, pillows or hats while infected.
