Wash your face morning and night with a medicated acne wash, warm water and a soft washcloth. Use gentle pressure so you don't aggravate the acne. Rinse well to avoid leaving irritating soap on your skin. Products which contain benzoyl peroxide, alpha-hydroxy acid and salicylic acid are all ingredients that help dry up and heal acne.

Avoid oil-based products such as moisturizing soaps and washes, cold cream, moisturizers, cosmetics and sunscreens. The oil in these products can clog your pores and cause further aggravation to existing acne. If you must use any of the above, apply fragrance-free, water-based products.

Use a a medicated spot treatment cream to treat problem areas after cleansing. Choose one of the skin-toned products to cover up acne while you heal it. Use these products exactly as directed to avoid drying out your skin and causing flaking or peeling.

Use a natural remedy like tea tree oil. Dilute tea tree oil with water -- 5 percent tea tree oil and 95 percent water -- and dab it gently on your acne with a cotton ball. Do not use it full strength as it can irritate your skin and increase aggravation of acne. Tea tree oil possesses anti-bacterial properties and is an accepted alternative treatment for acne.
