How to Treat a Cold Sore in Your Mouth

The Mayo Clinic defines cold sores as lesions that are fluid-filled and caused by the herpes simplex virus. Appearing within days or even years following exposure to the virus, cold sores usually erupt near the mouth or inside on the roof of the mouth. When left untreated, cold sores can last up to two weeks. The best time to start treatment is before a blister appears when you feel a burning or tingling. There are some home remedies that will help to relieve the discomfort.

Take an over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate the pain. There are many to choose from at the pharmacy, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

    • 2

Gargle and rinse the mouth with cool water to ease the discomfort. Eating an ice-pop will have the same soothing effect.

    • 3

Avoid drinking hot beverages and foods, as this will cause greater discomfort. Other items to avoid are spicy and salty foods, and citrus fruit and juices, which can burn or sting.

    • 4

Apply an ointment such as topical lidocaine or benzocaine if the cold sore appears on the corner of your mouth or lips. These are sold in the pharmacy departments without a prescription.
