How to Find a Fungal Skin Specialist

Fungal skin infections can be annoying, painful and sometimes embarrassing. While many fungal skin infections can be treated with over-the-counter anti-fungal medications, some fungal skin infections may persist. If you have a persistent fungal skin infection on the feet or elsewhere on the body, you may need to see a fungal skin specialist for proper treatment. Dermatologists are physicians who specialize in treating skin diseases, including fungal skin infections.

If you are comfortable doing so, contact friends, coworkers or other acquaintances for recommendations for dermatologists in your geographic area. You may know someone who has had a similar fungal skin infection or you may know someone who has had a particularly good (or bad) experience with a particular dermatologist. These people can be helpful sources of information.

Look in a telephone directory for dermatologists in your geographic area. You can do this with a hard copy phone book or look on the Internet for online telephone directories in your geographic area.

    • 3

Check the "Doctor Finder" on the American Medical Association's website or check similar websites, such as the American Academy of Dermatology's "Find a Dermatologist" tool. These search tools allow you to search by physician specialty (dermatology) and your ZIP code to limit your search to dermatologists in your geographic area.

Make an appointment with the dermatologist of your choosing, based upon your research. After you attend the appointment, be sure to follow all of the doctor's recommendations. Keep in mind that you may need to see the dermatologist more than once to ensure proper treatment and full healing of your fungal skin infection.
