Remedies for Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition associated with fair-skinned Irish, Scottish or Celtic women. The condition is characterized by flushed, bright red skin with small bumps and pimples, caused by engorged blood vessels. Though dermatologists usually prescribe lotions and antibiotics to treat rosacea, these treatments don't always work. Doctor's aren't sure what causes rosacea, but if you eliminate triggers such as sunlight and certain foods, and if you try some home remedies, you can decrease flareups.-
Avoid the Sun and Heat
-
Mary Lupo of the Tulane University School of Medicine warns that sunlight will trigger rosacea flareups. Unfortunately, many chemical sunscreens can irritate fair skin. Those with rosacea-prone skin should stay in the shade whenever possible, and should apply a 15 SPF or higher sunblock that lists titanium dioxide as the main ingredient. In addition, rosacea sufferers should avoid hot and humid environments, such as saunas and hot baths.
Change Your Diet
-
The National Rosacea Society compiled a list of foods that trigger rosacea flareups. The main culprits are spicy, sugary or starchy foods, hot drinks, and alcoholic beverages. Rosacea sufferers should avoid these foods and eat fresh fruits, cold-water fish and vegetables instead.
Use Soothing Skin Products
-
Gentle facial cleansers with sodium lauryl sulfate or disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate, and skin products containing witch hazel, chamomile or rose, can soothe inflamed skin. Rosacea sufferers should wash up with cool or cold water and avoid abrasive skin cleansers and sponges.
Try to Relax
-
Emotional stress is another major trigger of flushing symptoms. Some rosacea sufferers have found relief by practicing relaxation and breathing techniques, such as yoga and meditation.
