Depending on the severity of its condition, acne can cause scarring and lead to emotional distress. 1
Wash the affected areas with an oil-free cleanser. Facial scrubs, astringents and masks need to be avoided, as they tend to abrade skin, which in turn can aggravate acne. If you are developing acne around the hairline, it is best you shampoo your hair more often.

2
Try over-the-counter acne balms with an oil-balance formula. Look for balms containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid as the main ingredient.
-
3
Avoid irritants such as oil-based cosmetics, sunscreens, hairstyling gels and other concealers. Look for cosmetics that are "water-based" or "noncomedogenic." For most people, the sun may worsen the acne, and for some, even acne medications can worsen their condition. If you must go out in the sun, take care to use a sunscreen that doesn't clog your pores.

4
Keep your hair off your face. It could irritate the skin. Also avoid wearing tight hats and other warm clothing in and around your face that may cause excessive sweating. Sweat, oil and dirt could further disturb acne-prone skin.

5
Use over-the-counter gels and creams that have 5 percent tea tree oil content. Tea tree oil is supposed to clear acne, though it might cause skin irritation for few people, according to Mayo Clinic dermatologist Lawrence E. Gibson.

6
Don't ever scratch or pick at your blemishes. It could cause permanent scarring and infection.
