How to Get Rid of Keloids on Earlobe Piercings

Any piercing traumatizes the skin, even if it is as seemingly harmless as an earlobe piercing. Although most ear piercings heal without problems, some people find themselves with unsightly keloid scars around the pierced area. Such scars are caused by an overproduction of the collagen that the body makes to heal wounds. Fortunately, some home remedies may help to reduce or eliminate keloid scars when used consistently over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Change the jewelry in your piercing to something smaller; this will reduce irritation to the skin around the piercing. In many cases, this may slow or stop keloid formation.

    • 2

Apply pure tea tree oil to the keloid. Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic that can be purchased from health food stores. Dip a cotton swab into the oil and spread it over the scarred area at least twice a day.

    • 3

Break open a Vitamin E caplet and spread the oil over the keloid once daily. Allow the oil to sit for at least ten minutes, then rinse it off with clean water.

    • 4

Cover the scar with hydrocortisone cream daily. This cream is available over the counter from any drug store. If you try this method and the area becomes tender or you do not notice a change in the keloid's size after a week, discontinue using the cream.

Visit your doctor if no home remedies reduce the size of your keloid scar after two to three weeks. A doctor may inject the keloid with steroids to reduce its size. In extreme cases, surgery may be required to remove the scar tissue.
