Recognize the signs of chafing. Affected areas will be red, tender, and sometimes itchy. The chafed area appears on a part of your body where skin is rubbing against another area of skin or clothing. Severe chafing will have clear or bloody drainage, swelling or blisters. These cases warrant an evaluation by your health care provider as prescription treatment may be required.

Treat chafed skin by washing with warm water and perfume-free soap. Pat dry with a clean towel, making sure the skin is completely dry. A protective lubricant will be soothing and will prevent further skin-rubbing. Apply white petroleum jelly or zinc oxide cream to the affected area. You should see an improvement in the chafed area within 24 hours.

Dress in loose-fitting clothing to avoid further friction against sore skin. Wearing restrictive clothing or rough fabrics will be irritating and uncomfortable. Women should avoid bras and pantyhose and men should wear loose-fitting boxers rather than briefs. A breathable fabric such as cotton is best.

Avoid further chafing episodes by applying cornstarch to the areas where you are prone to sweating and friction. Cornstarch is a natural treatment for keeping your skin dry and alleviating friction. White petroleum jelly can also be used to avoid friction but will feel greasy under your clothing.
