Does lack of REM sleep make a person hallucinate?

Lack of REM sleep does not necessarily cause hallucinations. REM sleep is one of the stages of sleep during which dreams typically occur. While certain sleep disturbances, such as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), can lead to vivid dreams and dream-enacting behaviors during sleep, hallucinations generally occur while a person is awake and not exclusively due to lack of REM sleep. Some mental health disorders, neurological conditions, drug intoxication, and sensory deprivation may cause hallucinations.
