How to Apply a CPAP Mask

If you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, a CPAP mask connected to a CPAP machine can be a lifesaver. Continuous positive airway pressure pushes the tongue forward to keep your airway clear, so you no longer stop breathing or take shallow breaths. Learning to fall asleep wearing the mask can be difficult and frustrating at first. Properly wearing the mask makes the adjustment easier and ensures the mask functions as intended, to give you a more restful night's sleep.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the headgear over your head and tighten the forehead strap to a fit that stays in place and feels comfortable. Pull the strap to tighten, and then secure it -- sticking the strap to the interlocking fabric fasteners.

    • 2

Insert the nasal pillow into your nose -- if you have a nasal-only CPAP mask -- and not a mask that covers both your nose and your mouth.

    • 3

Place the full mask over your mouth and nose, if applicable. The mask should suction to your face.

    • 4

Put on your chinstrap, which starts at one ear and extends below your chin and across to your other ear. Your chin should rest in the hole of the strap. Tighten the strap to a comfortable fit.

    • 5

Place the end of the airway hose into the CPAP machine air outlet port. The hose should fit right inside the port, similar to the way you fit a vacuum attachment to the vacuum hose. One fits inside the other.
