Sleeping Hints

Commonly referred to as insomnia, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep can be an extremely frustrating condition to live with. It can cause stress, irritability, health problems, anxiety, depression and other symptoms. A good night's sleep is critical to our health and vitality, and there are numerous methods available to help alleviate insomnia.
  1. Eat Something

    • Contrary to the popular belief that eating late at night is bad for you, a small sandwich with lettuce can actually allow you to feel relaxed enough to fall asleep. However, do not devour a large meal, as, even though you may fall asleep more quickly, this meal can contribute to the formation of excess fat in your body. According to Dr. Kevin Pho, good before-sleep snacks include one glass of warm milk, turkey or nuts. Avoid sugar or carbohydrates.

    Exercise

    • Getting some physical exercise throughout the day may help tire your body out so that when it comes time for you to try to sleep, your body is ready for it. Make sure you exercise at least half an hour before you go to sleep to give your body time to slow down and unwind from your workout. Exercising will also increase the amount of oxygen flowing through your bloodstream, which will help you sleep better.

    Time to Reflect

    • Allow yourself some time during the day to reflect and destress. It could be as little as 10 minutes or as long as you want, but actually set aside this time in your schedule to simply sit quietly and think about any issues you have that are bothering you. Take this time to address these issues and try to come up with solutions. When it is time for you to go to sleep and your mind starts wandering to any stressful or worrying issues, you can tell yourself you have dealt with those for the day and if you haven't reached a solution you can work on it in your allocated time tomorrow.

    See a Doctor

    • If you have tried the more simple solutions and you are still having trouble falling or staying asleep it may be time to consult your doctor. Your insomnia may be related to some other health issue, and your doctor can help you get to the root of the cause and perhaps prescribe some medication to help you overcome your sleeping difficulties.

    Things to Avoid

    • There are a number of things that can contribute to your sleeping problems. They include caffeine and alcohol. Alcohol, while initially helping you to fall asleep, may lead to early awakenings, according to Dr. Kevin Pho. In addition, try to avoid taking daytime naps.
