How to Sterilize a CPAP Mask

Continuous Positive Airway Device (CPAP) equipment usually does not require sterilization in normal home use; thorough daily washing of the mask and air tubing is usually all that is required. However, sterilizatiion is required in clinical settings where multiple patients may be using a mask, for instance during sleep studies. Complete sterilization of a CPAP mask requires a hydrogen peroxide gas flux sterilizer, which works at low tempertures to prevent damage to any of the plastic or silicone parts of the mask.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any disposable items from the mask (e.g., nose puffs). Wash the mask thoroughly in antibacterial soap and warm water; let it completely air dry. Wrap the mask in handling paper.

    • 2

Turn on the sterilizer and allow it to warm up for 30 minutes. If a message on the sterilizer's display indicates that it needs a new hydrogen peroxide cartridge, install a new cartridge as per manufacturer's directions.

    • 3

Open the door of the sterilizer and place the mask on one of the shelves inside. Be careful that no part of the mask touches the walls of the sterilizer. Close the door tightly.

    • 4

Select "Standard Cycle" on the sterilizer's display screen. The sterilizer will re-warm for about 10 minutes, then begin the sterilization cycle. It will display the time remaining in the cycle on the display screen.

    • 5

Touch "Done" on the sterilizer's display screen when it indicates the cycle has finished. Open the door and remove the mask.
