How to Return a CPAP

Returning a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device is not difficult; most people do it either because they would like a newer model or feel the therapy isn't working for them. Whatever the reason, the best approach is to deal with your respiratory therapist. The RT is in the best position to advise you whether a return or an upgrade is possible and can deal with any insurance paperwork that might be involved.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your respiratory therapist and explain you want to return the CPAP machine. If your device is still in the lease period, it may be returned; if not, it's yours to keep, even if you discontinue CPAP therapy or switch to a new model.

    • 2

Tell your sleep doctor to fax a discharge order for CPAP therapy to the respiratory therapist. This gives the therapist written notification for your patient file that you have your doctor's permission to discontinue therapy.

    • 3

Bring the CPAP device with you when you visit your respiratory therapist. The RT will review data from the device and may ask you more questions about any problems you are having. If you decide to get a newer CPAP device and/or a mask re-fitting, the therapist will reinstruct you on the equipment. If you're simply returning the machine, the therapist will most likely recommend that you see your sleep doctor to discuss further treatment for your sleep apnea.
