CPAP Masks Instructions

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and it is a treatment device that uses mild air pressure to keep a person's airway open while sleeping. Mostly used for people who have breathing problems such as sleep apnea, a CPAP can also be used to help premature infants when the lungs are not fully developed. A CPAP machine features a fitted mask and straps to keep the device in place, in addition to a connecting tube and motor. The right-fitting CPAP can significantly improve quality of sleep, relieve daytime tiredness and decrease high blood pressure.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the mask over your head and face. Untwist the straps so that they are all facing the right direction. Connect the strap on the forehead first by pushing both strap clasps into each other until you hear a click. Continue connecting each strap until everything is either hooked together or secured using Velcro. Most nasal masks have three to four straps, but masks vary depending on which type your therapist recommends.

    • 2

Prevent the expiratory port from being blocked, since this is where the exhaled gas comes out. Some masks have the whisper swivel valve (the expiratory port) built in and others contain it on the outside.

    • 3

Tighten the mask by pulling on the upper forehead straps so that it is snug around your forehead. Repeat with the lower straps near the chin. Keep releasing and pulling until the mask fits snugly. Make sure to use the same pressure on each strap. If the mask is too tight it will be uncomfortable, however, a loose-fitting mask will allow air to escape.

    • 4

Turn the dial above the nose to adjust the pressure. Again, make sure it is snug, but comfortable.

    • 5

Connect the tubing to the mask, either through a separate whisper swivel value or one that is built in. Push one end into the hole in the front of the mask and the other end into the outlet of the unit.

    • 6

Locate the on/off button on the motor unit and turn it on. Concentrate on the mask and feel if there are any leaks. Adjust the straps again so that it is comfortable and the air is contained. Remember to pull all the straps so that they are uniform and have the same tension.

    • 7

Label with a marker each strap so that you can easily identify how the mask should be assembled for future uses. Position the tubes over the top of where you are sitting or lying down, such as a bed or a chair. Rest comfortably, taking three deep breaths through the nose. Make sure not to pull or tug on the mask or the headgear.
