How to Adjust a CPAP Mask
Continuous positive airway pressure machines operate by pushing constant air through a tube connected from your CPAP machine to your face mask. Doctors often prescribe CPAP therapy to treat sleep apnea. The pressure of air is predetermined by your physician. How a mask fits is important in the success of your CPAP treatment. If a mask is too tight, sores can develop. If a mask fits loosely, air leakage can occur, causing disruption in your sleep.Things You'll Need

1
Find a mask that frames your face. Some masks have head straps with coverage over your mouth and nose. Other masks have nasal pillows that fit directly under your nose.
-
2
Allow your physician to instruct you on how to initially adjust your CPAP mask, as indicated by the Mayo Clinic.
-
3
Place the mask over your nose, so that your mask doesn't sit too high. Adjusting the straps on your mask can help secure the mask in place on your face. Always adjust the straps evenly on each side of your face.
-
4
Adjust your face mask during the day, instead of immediately prior to bedtime. Once you find a setting you're comfortable with, refrain from adjusting the mask any further.
-
5
Wash your face before wearing your CPAP mask. When your face is clean, your mask will adhere to your face better. Wash the silicon base of your face mask (the part that touches your face) with water and a scent-free detergent daily.
