Problems With Sleeping on Your Stomach
-
Lower Back Pain
-
Before you to go sleep, find a position that is comfortable. Stomach sleepers might experience lower back pain upon waking. When you sleep on your stomach, your lower back is forced to extend. Stomach sleeping flattens the normal curve of the spine, and the extension that the position causes might place pressure on your facets. The muscles in your lower back will also feel the pressure of this altered position, according to Chiropractors North America.
Neck Aches
-
Because your head is forced to turn to one side when you sleep on your stomach, you often will wake and feel a crimp in your neck. Putting the head in this position can result in muscle and ligament strain because the neck and spine's alignment are distorted, says Dr. Adam Tanase. Pillows raise the head level and increase strain on the neck.
Stomach Sleeping During Pregnancy
-
The American Pregnancy Association recommends that pregnant women avoid sleeping on their stomachs and instead sleep on their side, especially their left side to more easily provide blood and nutrients to the baby. As a woman's abdomen expands during pregnancy, stomach sleeping becomes increasingly uncomfortable.
