How to Program a Resmed S8 Escape II CPAP

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy uses air pressure to allow patients with obstructive sleep apnea to continue to breath normally while asleep. The ResMed S8 Escape II is an advanced CPAP device that is "auto-titrating." This means that it constantly adjusts the amount of air pressure it delivers at the mask depending on a patient's breathing rate and other factors. Auto-titration means that the Escape II is more comfortable for patients and makes CPAP therapy more effective. The Escape II has a number of features that you can access and set through the device's LCD display.

Set the ramp time by pressing the up or down arrow keys on the unit's keypad. This puts the device into the "RAMP" menu and shows the amount of ramp time in minutes on the right of the display. When the device is ramping, it drops down to a very low pressure and gradually increases to the full prescribed CPAP pressure, so you have time to fall asleep before you get full air pressure from your mask. The ramp time is the amount of time the machine takes to come back up to full pressure. Once you've set the ramp time, press the "START/STOP" button to begin receiving air pressure.

Reset the exhalation pressure (EPR) by pressing the left keypad button and then pressing the down button until you see the "EPR LEVEL" menu. Press the left keypad button again to change this setting. The EPR level indicates how much the machine drops the air pressure as you're exhaling; it can be set "OFF," or to 1, 2 or 3, with 1 being the lowest pressure and 3 being the highest. Use the up or down keys to set the EPR level; then press the left key one more time to accept the setting.
