How to Troubleshoot a Respironics BiPAP
Sleep apnea is a very common condition affecting up to 18 million Americans, according to the American Association for Respiratory Care. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing stops or gets very shallow during sleep. A bi-level positive airway pressure machine (BiPAP) prevents apnea by delivering continuous airway pressure through a face mask and into the lungs for proper inhalation during sleep. Philips Respironics is a world-leading manufacturer of health care products, including their popular line of BiPAP machines. It is important to know how to troubleshoot your Respironics BiPAP machine to keep it working properly.Instructions

1
Place the Respironics BiPAP machine on a firm, level surface within easy reach and away from any heating or cooling equipment, such as radiators, air vents and air conditioners. Make sure there are no drapes, bedding or pillows blocking the back of the machine. According to Respironics, air must flow freely around the device for the system to work properly.
-
2
Plug your Respironics BiPAP machine into a workable power outlet and wait for the display screen to light up. If you are getting no power to the device, switch to a different outlet and plug in the BiPAP machine again. Make sure the AC power cord is securely plugged into the back of the BiPAP machine's power inlet opening, as well.

3
Check all flexible tubing for air leaks and splits in the lines. If there are any leaks or openings, you will need to replace the tubing. Call your medical equipment provider for replacement tubing if you do not have any spare hoses.
-
4
Remove the reusable, gray foam filter from the filter holder, wash with mild soap and let the filter dry completely. Place the clean air filter back in the filter holder located on the back of the BiPAP machine right below the power inlet opening. Be careful not to bump and loosen the power cord when inserting the filter into the filter holder.

5
Disconnect and reconnect the flexible tubing that runs from the machine to your mask to ensure it is properly connected. Make sure there are no kinks or bends in the tubing. Verify that the flexible tubing is inserted properly into the air outlet port located on the back of the BiPAP machine and secure the other end to the Respironics mask.

6
Adjust the Respironics BiPAP mask and headgear to ensure you have a tight, secure fit. The American Sleep Apnea Association states that masks and headgear come in many different shapes and sizes. If you still have trouble getting the proper fit, call your home care provider to try another size or different style mask.

Reset your machine by unplugging the unit then reapply power again. If that does not work, call your home care equipment provider to see if your BiPAP machine needs repaired or replaced. You can also call the Respironics Technical Product Support Center for assistance.
