How do I Stop a Person From Snoring?

According to the Atlanta Snoring Institute, snoring affects 40% of men and 25% of women. Sometimes the problem is bad enough that it wakes a sleeping partner. In these cases, a few tips may help alleviate the snoring.
  1. Stop Smoking and Drinking

    • Alcoholic beverages, like sleeping pills, loosen up your muscles before bedtime. This will make your muscles relax and limit your airway, which leads to increased snoring. Nicotine causes throat and nasal inflammation, which may also increase snoring.

    Sleeping Aids

    • Snorers often use nasal strips to open up the airways and prevent snoring. Another sleeping aid is a snore pillow, which encourage users to sleep on their sides, making snoring less likely. A dentist or doctor can also fit a person with a dental appliance known as a mandibular advancement appliance.

    Consult a Doctor

    • Snoring very loudly or deeply are signs of a more serious problem called obstructive sleep apnea. This occurs when passageways are so severely blocked that snoring increases to compensate. OSA is a serious ailment, and you should consult a doctor right away if you think you may have it. A doctor can recommend medicine or possibly surgery to alleviate symptoms.
