How to Program a CPAP Machine

A CPAP machine, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure, is a device worn by those suffering from sleep apnea, an obstructive disorder that prevents the sufferer from breathing properly while sleeping. The two integral components of the machine, the therapeutic mask and the CPAP machine, are chosen by the doctor to fit the specific needs of the patient, and only a doctor can properly program the machine. However, it may be helpful for the patient to at least have a basic understanding of how the machine operates, even if the actual programming is best left to the primary care doctor.

Find the two "secret" buttons the doctor uses to begin the programming sequence. The locations of the buttons vary by brand, but are usually located within close proximity to the LCD screen where the programming takes place. These buttons are usually located beneath a logo, or are in some way integrated with the design of the logo, and must be pressed in unison. Some brands may also have you plug in the machine while simultaneously initiating the programming sequence by pressing the two secret buttons. Consult the paperwork included with your machine, although this information is intentionally limited to the physician's use so it may not be listed in full. The LCD screen will indicate that setup mode has begun.

Cycle through the features using the advance button. Changes are made by use of the arrow button, although this may vary by brand also. Possible settings include: CPAP pressure, ramp time, ramp start time, auto off and compliance meter value, among others. Your doctor knows the significance of each setting and what the value should be. Do not change any values yourself.

Observe the inhalation pressure setting. This is calculated by your doctor for your personal needs. The machine regulates the pressure of the airflow entering your airways so any obstruction is effectively eliminated and your body receives the necessary airflow to maintain steady inhaling throughout the night.

Observe the exhalation pressure setting. The machine can either calculate exhalation automatically, or your doctor can do the programming, depending on the type of equipment being used. The face mask is specifically designed to work in conjunction with the CPAP machine and to fit your facial structure. The mask ensures that you are getting the proper exhalation pressure throughout the night.

Press the "End" button to exit setup mode and return to normal operation. Never save any setting that you have changed. Consult your doctor immediately in case any value has been accidentally changed.
