How to Mold an Anti Snore Mouthpiece

Snoring can be a hugely destructive problem for you and the person you share your bed with. It disrupts sleep, which causes tiredness, irritability, lack of focus and can lead to relationship problems. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common avoidable causes of snoring are obesity and alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption relaxes the throat muscles, which causes snoring. The anatomy of the mouth will influence the likelihood of snoring. An anti-snore mouthpiece adjusts the position of the tongue and soft palate, which keeps the airways open to eliminate snoring. To work properly, the mouthpiece must be molded to the shape of your mouth.

Boil a measuring cup full of water. The anti-snore mouthpiece is made from a pliable plastic material that becomes soft and flexible when hot. Hot water is essential to correctly mold an anti-snore mouthpiece. An ill-fitting mouthpiece may cause more problems.

    • 2

Remove the mouthpiece from the packaging. Some anti-snore mouthpieces come with a removable tab that enables you to dip the mouthpiece into the water. Others don't come with a tab. Place the mouthpiece on a clean surface and wait for the water to reach boiling point.

    • 3

Pour a measuring cup full of ice cold water into another bowl. You need only enough water to submerge the mouthpiece. You will use the cold water once you have molded the mouthpiece.

    • 4

Pour the boiling water into a bowl and let it cool for a minute. Do not use boiling water to mold the mouthpiece because this poses a risk of burning.

    • 5

Submerge the mouthpiece into the bowl of warm water. If the mouthpiece has a tab, use that to hold the mouthpiece under the water. If it doesn't have a tab, gently place the mouthpiece in the water and use a pair of tongues or a spoon to remove it. Manufacturer instructions will vary, but it typically takes about 12 seconds for the water to make the mouthpiece flexible for molding.

    • 6

Shake off any excess water and place the mouthpiece over the teeth on your lower jaw. Bite down gently and make sure your mouth is in a natural position. Use your tongue to press it against the soft palate. Molding the mouthpiece to an unnatural mouth position will reduce the effectiveness of the product, so don't chew or otherwise move the mouthpiece.

    • 7

Leave the mouthpiece in position for approximately one minute. Remove the mouthpiece and place it in the bowl of cold water. The cold water makes the plastic inflexible and fixes the mouthpiece in the shape of your mouth.

Cut off the tab using a pair of scissors. Aim to cut it as close to the molded part to reduce rough edges.
