Supplements to Help Sleep

According to the National Institutes of Health, around 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia, a sleep disorder that affects the ability to fall asleep or remain asleep. As a result, more and more people are turning to various sleep supplements as a treatment to help them get the rest they need each night.
  1. Diphenhydramine

    • This is one of the most common antihistamines and sleep aids found in commercial over-the-counter medications like Benedryl, Nytol, Sominex, Tylenol PM and Excedrin PM. This supplement can unfortunately leave you feeling drowsy the next day. Possible side effects of the drug include dizziness, daytime drowsiness, blurred vision, and dry mouth and throat.

    Doxylamine

    • Doxylamine is another antihistamine commonly used as a sleep aid. It allows you to get restful sleep when suffering from severe cold or flu, relieving the symptoms of the illness and inducing drowsiness. Possible side effects include constipation, headache, blurred vision and upset stomach.

    Melatonin

    • Melatonin sleep supplements are designed to mimic the naturally occurring melatonin hormone in the body that regulates your internal clock. Melatonin sleep supplements are sold in health food shops. According to the Mayo Clinic the effects of melatonin as a sleep aid are not as consistent as those of over-the-counter and prescribed supplements. Common side effects reported include daytime drowsiness, headache, dizziness, mild anxiety, stomach discomfort, depression, confusion and irritability.

    Valerian

    • Sleep supplements are made from the valerian herbal plant. They effectively reduce the time it takes for you to fall asleep. They also help ensure a more restful sleep with fewer interruptions. Supplements made using the valerian plant vary in potency. It's a good idea to speak with your doctor before taking them if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication. Common side effects of valerian sleep supplements include headache, anxiety and heart palpitations.
