How to Adjust a REMstar CPAP

A CPAP machine is used for people who have severe sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition in which the throat's air passage becomes blocked, causing a cessation of breath for about 10 seconds. The main function of a CPAP machine is to blow air down your throat and windpipe at a certain pressure with a hose connected to the machine at one end and a mask your wear. The pressure is adjustable, and it is a vital function every CPAP user should know.

    • 1

Unplug the CPAP REMstar's power cord from the machine's back.

    • 2

Lift the LCD (liquid crystal display) cover and find the two buttons that are the closest to the CPAP machine's back.

    • 3

Plug the power cord into the back of the CPAP REMstar machine's back as you simultaneously press the two buttons.

    • 4

Listen for two beeps and look for the word "setup" on the LCD screen's lower right-hand corner. This takes you to the clinician's setup mode. Make the proper adjustment of the pressure setting of your CPAP RemStar machine. This setting goes by number. If you cannot breathe properly, you might have your CPAP machine on too low a setting. The higher the pressure you need, the higher the number you will need.

Look at the list of other settings, besides the pressure setting. They are as follows: altitude, ramp time, mask alert, patient reminder, ramp start pressure and auto off. Changing the ramp time setting will allow you to lengthen the time your machine builds up to its maximum pressure. This can usually take up to 45 minutes. The ramp start pressure is the lowest pressure you want your CPAP machine to start at. The altitude setting depends upon what level you are at above sea level. This can vary with different CPAP machines.
