Natural Ways to Stay Awake During the Day

Many people struggle with midday sleepiness, especially those who work in monotonous office settings. If you have problems staying awake during the day, you don't have to take a stimulant or drink a lot of coffee. There are several natural ways to promote alertness and energy, making your day easier to manage. Using specific techniques you will be able to stay awake and focused on school, work and your general daily responsibilities.
  1. Natural Supplements

    • There are many natural homeopathic remedies that can help you stay energized enough to stay awake during your day. One of the top energizers are B vitamins -- B-1,B-2, B-5, B-6 and B-12 -- because all of them synthesize energy in the body. You are likely to get some levels of B vitamins in your diet, but to make sure that you are on top of your game, spray two 500 mcg squirts in your mouth or take two 500 mcg tablets of B-12 right before your day begins.

    Diet Changes

    • Avoid eating a heavy breakfast to start your day. Your digestive system will have to work overtime to process all that you have eaten and by midday you will feel an energy drain and become sleepy. Instead, eat small meals throughout your day. Integrate fruits and protein-packed snacks such as peanut butter into your meals. Drink a lot of water to keep your body hydrated and alert, and avoid fried foods.

    Quick Exercise

    • Light exercise is ideal for energizing your body and helping you stay awake. If you are at work, take a short break and walk around your station or around your floor. A 10-minute walk outside is ideal to help you regain your focus. If possible, do a few push ups, jumping jacks or spend five minutes doing yoga stretches.

    Breathing Exercises

    • If you notice you are yawning, recognize that your body is signaling you that your lungs are low on oxygen and this process increases levels of carbon monoxide in your system, making you feel sleepy. To avoid this problem, take deep breaths through your nose, exhaling through your mouth. Be aware of your surroundings. If possible, go outside and inhale fresh air. This will help you quickly combat sleepiness and make you more alert.
