How to Get a Prescription for Exercise Equipment

Exercise equipment is what most would consider expensive, ranging from $600 to over $2,000 for just one machine. While some purchase exercise equipment because they simply like to work out in their own home, others have a medical need for it. People who are recovering from an accident that has impacted the use of their limbs or muscles, who have sports injuries, or who have disorders that limit the use of their muscles often need exercise equipment in their homes to treat and improve their conditions. Those with a medical need can typically get a prescription for exercise equipment that will reduce the cost of it.

Visit your doctor and ask if he can give you a prescription, on his letterhead, for a specific piece of exercise equipment. He will also need to list the condition it is to be used to treat. This is typically not an issue for doctors if you have an established medical condition that is being treated or needs treatment. You usually can't get a prescription for exercise equipment without having a medical need.

Determine your state's guidelines for using a prescription to purchase exercise equipment by visiting the state's official website. Most states allow for the exemption of sales tax when exercise equipment is being purchased with a valid prescription. This can save you up to a few hundred dollars, since most exercise equipment is moderately expensive.

Purchase the exercise equipment you need. Be sure you tell the dealer you're getting it from that you have a prescription, so that they know not to charge tax. You will need to take the prescription with you when you purchase your equipment--the dealer will likely copy it and keep it on file for the company's own tax purposes.
