Twisted Ankle Cures

A twisted ankle can occur when you least expect it. Maybe you are a basketball player going for a jump shot and your foot falls out from under you. Or you may not see that small step in front of you, causing your foot to slip. Whatever the reason, twisted ankles can be very painful and inhibit everyday activities. A few steps should be taken to help expedite healing that twisted ankle.
  1. Rest

    • Rest is one of the most crucial components to healing a twisted ankle. The severity of the twist will determine how much rest is necessary. If it is mild, you may only need a few hours of inactivity before you are well again. For moderate to severe ankle sprains, you may have to rest it for several days to a few weeks. Gently attempt to stand on the injured foot, then try to walk. If it is possible, mild activity such as walking, stationary bicycling or swimming may help heal the ankle. If you cannot walk, don't force it. Wait a day or two and then try to engage in slow walking with a cane or crutch.

    Ice

    • For the first 48 hours after an ankle sprain, use ice to relieve swelling and inflammation. You may use an ice pack, a cold compress such as a cold towel or a bag of frozen vegetables. Apply to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, then remove it for one to two hours. Repeat this up to four times each day.

    Compress & Elevate

    • Use sports tape or a fitted bandage to wrap the ankle. This will reduce swelling and give your ankle some support when you move. Be sure to wrap it tight enough that it offers support but not so tight that it cuts off circulation.

Keep the ankle rested on a stack of pillows or something else that keeps it above heart level. This will decrease the swelling and bruising that accompanies the injury.

    Painkillers

    • Use painkillers in conjunction with the aforementioned forms of therapy. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen will help alleviate pain and decrease swelling. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and do not take more than the recommended dosage.

    See a Doctor

    • If your twisted ankle is not showing significant signs of healing within a couple of days, see a doctor for further advice. You may have a fracture or a torn ligament, and a doctor may decide a cast or physical therapy is necessary. The worst-case scenario is surgery if the injury is too severe and other methods do not work.
