What Are the Treatments for Achilies Tendon Injuries?
The Achilles tendon is incredibly strong and able to withstand 1,000 pounds of torsion according to Dr. Andrew Feldman, author of The Jock Doc's Body Repair Kit. Yet, it is still vulnerable to injury, inflammation and being torn. This might happen suddenly or slowly over time. Treatment depends on the injury type.-
Achilles Tendon Injuries
-
Achilles tendonitis (inflammation of the tendon) is extremely common for sports enthusiasts and the general population. It comes on slowly, increases in intensity, and is attributed to overuse. Snowball crepitation (tenosynovitis) is when the inflamed tendon rubs against its sheath (protective coating), making a crunchy sound. An Achilles rupture tears the tendon from the bone.
Achilles Tendonitis Treatment
-
You can stretch and strengthen the calf muscles with specific exercises to minimize the pain and inflammation of Achilles tendonitis. Wearing a night splint to hold the foot in a flexed position will passively stretch the calf muscle while sleeping. Also, icing the tendon will decrease swelling.
Snowball Crepitation Treatment
-
You can get snowball crepitation if Achilles tendonitis goes on too long or is left untreated. Stretch and apply ice to alleviate this condition. You will also need to consult a medical professional to set up an effective treatment plan.
Achilles Tendon Tear Treatment
-
Consult with a doctor for an Achilles tendon tear. You will need either surgery or a cast that keeps the foot extended with toes pointing down. According to Anybody's Sports Medicine Book, there are no successful home treatments for this condition.
Alternative Treatments
-
For those suffering from Achilles tendonitis, acupuncture, massage, physical therapy and warm water therapy may be helpful. Also, rest from strenuous activities and proper footwear can speed up recovery.
