Heat Vs. Ice for Joint Pain

Every family has its own home remedies for various medical conditions. When someone complains about joint pain or swelling, most point towards the use of ice or heating packs. Understanding when to use each is important for proper treatment.
  1. Ice packs

    • Ice packs are used in the treatment of pain, swelling and inflammation. These packs can be made from ice wrapped in towels or frozen food packages.

    When to use ice packs

    • Ice packs should be used in the early stages of injury. Use these packs during the first two or three days to help swelling. Apply the ice packs for 10 to 20 minutes, three times a day.

    Heating pads

    • Heating pads are warming items used in the treatment of joint pain and injuries. You can purchase these items, or use warm towels for the same effect.

    When to use heating pads

    • Use heating pads if your symptoms persist after three days. The pads continue treating the swelling, while helping regain movement. Apply heating pads for 20 to 30 minutes.

    Heating pads vs. ice pads

    • Both heating and ice pads can be used to treat injuries. Understanding when to use either is very important. Use ice in the beginning phases of the injury, and use heat if symptoms continue. Consult your physician for advice pertaining to your injury.
