How to Wrap a Pulled Back Shoulder Muscle

A pulled back shoulder muscle, or deltoid, can be a very painful thing. Various bones, joints, ligaments and tendons can cause different types of injuries, from dislocation and separation to tendinitis and fracture. The reason shoulders hurt so easily is the shoulder's range of movement. This large range makes the shoulder an unstable joint with many muscles and tendons at risk for injury, according to the Ohio State University Medical Center. However, if you don't want to or need to see a doctor, a pulled back shoulder muscle can be wrapped using a few simple steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Store-bought medical wrap or some kind of strong material, such as a sheet
  • Elastic bandage
  • Friend or loved one to help you

Instructions

    • 1

Begin making a sling by taking your material and folding it in half, creating a triangular shape. Place the point of your triangle under your elbow. Draw the two remaining ends up and around either side of your neck. You should feel support under your elbow when holding the ends. Support of the elbow and arm is important in dealing with a pulled back shoulder muscle.

    • 2

Tie the two ends of your fabric securely behind your neck. Construct a knot you are most comfortable using. A square knot is the strongest and smallest knot. Position your wrist at a slightly higher elevation than the elbow. Make sure to press your elbow flat against your side.

    • 3

Wrap the elastic bandage across your chest, remembering to enclose your sling under the bandage as well. Use the clips included with your bandage to secure the wrap on your body. Including this bandage will help insure limited movement of the pulled back shoulder muscle.
