Achilles Tendon Running Pain

Pain in the Achilles tendon is common while running. There are a number of causes, and simple preventive remedies.
  1. What Is It?

    • The Achilles tendon is one of the largest tendons in the human body. This tough connective tissue attaches the calf muscle to the back of the heel bone, or calcaneus.

    Achilles Tendonitis

    • Tendonitis, or inflammation of the Achilles tendon, is a common cause of pain among runners. Overuse can cause pain and stiffness, which begin gradually and continue to worsen without treatment.

    Achilles Tenosynovitis

    • Achilles tenosynovitis is an inflammatory condition in the Achilles tendon sheath rather than in the tendon itself. If left untreated, it can cause scarring that restricts the movement of the tendon.

    Treatment

    • To help avoid inflammatory injuries, stretch adequately and warm up before running. Rest and refrain from running when pain is present. Consult a physician if pain persists.

    Tennis Leg

    • Tennis leg is the common term for a rupture between the calf muscle and the Achilles tendon. Sufferers feel a sudden, sharp pain in the calf, and a loss of movement. This condition can require surgery, and treatment should be sought immediately.
