How to Put Pads on Crutches
Put pads on crutches to minimize the pain to your hands and armpits. Although the original padding on the crutches is designed for comfort, with continuous movement it may not be enough. Affix additional padding to the areas of the crutches where your body makes contact with them to make using crutches more comfortable.Things You'll Need
- Thick fabric or cushioned pads
- Gel shoe inserts (optional)
- Scissors
- Tape (duct or electrical)
Instructions

1
Cut a thick piece of fabric or small cushions to the size of the armpit pads. Save extra fabric to make adjustments if needed.
-
2
Wrap the fabric around the armpit pads. Use duct tape or electrical tape to secure in place.
-
3
Use gel inserts for shoes and tape them in place for a comfortable addition to the handgrips. Or, wrap them with the same fabric you used for the armpit pads and tape in place.
-
4
Adjust the pads to the right thickness and placement for desired comfort. When the pads wear down replace them with a new piece of fabric or gel. Replace the additional padding regularly to keep the crutches comfortable.
