What do you for a bad sprain?

RICE:

1. Rest: Limit movement and keep the sprained area immobilized.

2. Ice: Apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the affected area for 20 minutes every 2-3 hours for the first 24-48 hours to reduce swelling and pain.

3. Compression: Use an elastic bandage or compression wrap to provide support and minimize swelling. Make sure not to wrap too tightly as this can impede circulation.

4. Elevation: Elevate the sprained area above the heart level to reduce swelling.

Additional tips:

- Take pain relievers: Consult a doctor or pharmacist about taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to manage pain.

- Buddy tape: If it's a finger sprain, you can tape it to an adjacent uninjured finger to provide support.

- Immobilize with a splint or cast: For more severe sprains, a doctor might recommend using a splint or cast to immobilize the affected area.

- Physical therapy: Once the sprain starts healing, physical therapy might beneficial to help restore full range of motion and strength to the affected area.

- Consult a doctor: If the pain is severe, lasts more than a few days, or if there is any deformity or loss of function, seek medical advice.
