What is splenorenal shunting?

Splenorenal shunting is the abnormal movement of blood from the spleen into the renal vein, bypassing the liver. The liver is responsible for detoxifying and regulating the blood before it enters the rest of the body, and this process is impaired when blood is shunted directly to the kidneys. This abnormality is usually caused by a condition called portal hypertension.
