What should you do if your ankle hurts when walk?
Immediate care
1. Rest. Avoid putting weight on the ankle as much as possible. Use crutches or a cane if necessary.
2. Ice. Apply ice to the ankle for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
3. Compression. Wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage to help reduce swelling.
4. Elevation. Prop the ankle up on a pillow when sitting or lying down.
After the first 24 hours
1. Start moving the ankle. Gently rotate the ankle and point the foot up and down. This will help to prevent stiffness.
2. Massage the ankle. Gently massage the ankle to help reduce swelling and pain.
3. Take pain relievers. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help to relieve pain.
