Instructions for an Ankle Air Cast

An ankle air cast is a type of cast designed for sprained ankles or lower leg injuries. A doctor suggests the cast when it seems appropriate for a patient. The cast allows the wearer to move and flex the foot while providing support for a healing ankle, foot or lower leg.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a doctor and have the foot or ankle x-rayed. Never assume the injury is a sprain without a doctor checking it. When a doctor determines that the injury is a sprained ankle, ask if an air cast is appropriate for healing the sprain. Only a doctor can determine the severity of the injury and the appropriate support needed to heal. If the doctor gives approval for the air cast, size the leg and purchase an appropriately sized air cast. Purchase the air cast from any medical supply store or drug store.

    • 2

Wash the foot, ankle and leg. Always wash the leg before putting on the air cast to prevent foul odors. Dry with a towel and put on a sock. Thick socks are ideal because they are more absorbent of sweat.

    • 3

Place the rounded edge of the strap under the heel or place the stirrup in the middle of the foot. Gently lift the air cast upward and position the sides of the cast on either side of the ankle.

    • 4

Secure the straps of the air cast, starting from the bottom and working upward around the brace. Wrap the air cast with the bandage that comes with the cast for extra support and keep it closed with the fastener.

    • 5

Remove the air cast for showering and as directed by a doctor. Wear the cast until the doctor determines it is no longer necessary.
