Torn Ligament Repair
-
Protect and Rest
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, sprained ligaments should be protected from further injury through the use of crutches or splints. The injured ligament should be rested to promote healing.
Use Ice
-
A cold pack with ice may be applied to an injured ligament to limit swelling. A compression sleeve with cold water may also be used.
Compress and Elevate
-
A compressed bandage or elastic wrap should be used to wrap a sprain. A sprained limb should be kept elevated to minimize swelling.
Pain
-
Pain from a sprained ligament may be relieved with over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
Emergency
-
Sprained ligaments may need emergency medical care if a popping sound is observed with an injured ligament or a sprained limb cannot bear weight. A fever above 100 degrees Fahrenheit or red swelling may indicate an infection that requires a doctor’s care.
