Signs of a Stroke in a Woman

Women experience some of the same symptoms of stroke as men. Some common signs of stroke are numbness or weakness on one side of the body, loss of memory, and trouble speaking or walking. Women may also have other unique signs of a stroke---such as heart palpitations, sudden shortness of breath, or hiccups.
  1. Heart Palpitations

    • Women are more likely than men to experience heart palpitations when suffering from a stroke. Heart palpitations are fast, irregular heartbeats. The condition will begin suddenly and can extend for a prolonged period. Experiencing heart palpitations along with any of the above common symptoms can indicate a stroke.

    Hiccups

    • Women have a tendency to experience a sudden, violent case of hiccups when having a stroke. Hiccups are throat spasms that occur when you try to inhale a breath. These spasms occur in short succession and can continue for a prolonged period of time. Experiencing a prolonged case of the hiccups while experiencing another one or more symptoms is cause to consult your doctor immediately.

    Sudden Shortness of Breath

    • Women may experience a sudden shortness of breath when experiencing a stroke. This can be an early sign of a stroke and will occur without warning. Shortness of breath may also be related to other stroke symptoms such as hiccups and chest pain. When experiencing this symptom, it is important to sit down, try to remain calm, and immediately call your doctor or emergency assistance.
