Signs of a Stroke in a Man

Stroke, according to the American Stroke Association, is the number three killer of people in America. Strokes are caused by the blocking, or clotting, of blood vessels (and sometimes bursting of blood vessels) which transport nutrients to and from the brain. When this happens, the brain can't get the nutrients it needs to survive and begins to fail. At worst, a stroke can kill.

Most often, strokes are associated with men as opposed to women (though women may also experience them). What follows are some warning signs of strokes in men.
  1. Numbness

    • A sudden onset of numbness in the body can be a definite warning sign of a stroke. If you experience sudden numbness in your face or limbs, this may indicate the onset of the stroke. Furthermore, if you are experiencing numbness confined primarily to one side of the body, this is an even clearer indicator that a stroke may be occurring.

    Confusion

    • Sudden confusion may also be an indicator of a stroke. If someone goes from being completely coherent one second to suddenly seeming disoriented or confused the next, this may indicate the onset of a stroke. Difficulty forming words and sentences, or understanding others, may serve as warning signs of this sudden confusion.

    Vision Failure

    • Strokes also are often accompanied by trouble with vision. If you experience sudden difficulty seeing out of either eye (or both), this could be a sign of a stroke.

    Loss of Motor Control

    • When a stroke sets in, people often experience a loss of motor control. They have difficulty walking and doing coordinated activities, experience decreased hand-eye coordination, and may seem off-balance. If any or all of these signs suddenly appear, they could be signs of a stroke.

    Headache

    • Finally, stroke victims often experience a headache that seems to come out of nowhere. If someone seems to be experiencing a crippling headache for no apparent reason, this could signify that a stroke is about to occur.
